ISRAELI – TURKISH CONFLICT THROUGH AIRPORT SECURITY

The more Israeli – Turkish ties are tensed the more people from both nationalities suffer while passing through airport securities, in this process.

Ben Gurion International Airport – Israel
On August 4, 2011 Turkish tourists, who arrived in Israel for the holiday of Ramadan and visited Jerusalem, claim that on their way back to Turkey at Ben-Gurion Airport they were harassed psychologically by the Israeli airport security. According to passengers their luggages has been checked more than couple of times, their shoes are pierced over and over to check if they contain explosive material and even their handkerchiefs went through a detailed security check. According to another passenger, even the women examined through their underwear in separate rooms.

Ataturk Airport – Turkey
One day after Turkish tourists’ detailed examination, On August 5, 2011 Istanbul Ataturk Airport security detained 40 Israeli passengers for questioning. Even though Turkish authorities denied the situation, deputy governor of Istanbul said “we are acting on a basis of reciprocity principle, therefore we apply the same practices that Israeli authorities apply to our citizens.” According to Ynet news, Opposition Chairwoman Tzipi Livni said “The operation against the flotilla was justified, the Gaza Strip blockade was justified, and the detention of Israelis at a Turkish airport is unacceptable – yet things may further deteriorate, it won’t end with delays at the airport.”
